Overview

The FAA Instrument Rating is a rating issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, which allows a pilot to legally operate an aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions or IFR flight. More importantly, it allows a pilot to operate within the IFR system that professional pilots prefer. In today’s complex airspace most feel an instrument rating is essential. What You Need to Get Started

In order to earn an instrument rating, a pilot must possess a private pilot certificate, and complete both a knowledge test and a practical flight test. Prior to enrolling in our instrument rating, you must have at least a private pilot certificate, a current biennial flight review and a current medical certificate. If your biennial flight review is not current, we can complete that prior to enrollment. If you are not an American citizen, you will also need to complete a TSA screening process. No worries, we can guide you through that process.

Once TSA screening is complete, you are ready to enroll in our FAA Approved Part 141 instrument pilot course.

Now the learning begins.

Before you decide that it seems too difficult, let us assure you that we are there not only to teach but also to guide you. From your initial interview, your first instrument flight, your first instrument cross country, throughout this experience, our professional staff will be there to answer questions and help make this not only a learning experience but a fun experience that will change your life. Requirements to earn your instrument rating include;

  1. Be at least 17 years old to acquire the rating.
  2. Be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  3. Possess at least a third-class FAA medical examination
  4. Pass the written aeronautical knowledge test.
  5. Receive flight training from a certified Instrument Flight Instructor.
  6. Completion of the training including a minimum of 35 hours of dual flight instruction and a final endorsement from your Certified Flight Instructor stating that you meet all requirements and are prepared for a practical flight test.

Time and Hours

The Federal Aviation Administration, under part 141 of the Federal Aviation Regulations has set a minimum time for an applicant to obtain an instrument rating at 35 hours. Students will also receive ground training via the on-line Cessna Pilot Center Instrument Course as well as classroom time and pre and post flight briefings. With each of our students, our goal is to provide the most professional training available.

Training will be conducted under FAA Part 141. Ocean Aviation reserves the right to train student under part 61 should the student not maintain standards. Included in tuition is all dual and solo flight time, enrollment in the Cessna Pilot Center Private Pilot Course, Pre-Flight and Post Flight Briefings, and Classroom training. The cost of FAA medical, Navigation Charts and Approach Plates, knowledge test, flight test, aircraft to be used in the flight test are not included in the cost.

Many students can complete the Instrument Course in 35 hours which is the FAA minimum number of flight hours. However, non-currency and or not being comfortable in the aircraft can add a few extra hours to your course.
